NHMRC Research Funding Information for Applicants

Researchers submitting applications for NHMRC Research Funding should seek advice on preparing applications and submission procedures from the College of Science Research Office.

Funding Rules and Instructions for each scheme can be found at: http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/funding/index.htm.


APPLICATION IDENTIFICATION NUMBERS

The NHMRC requires Chief Investigator’s to have an Application Identification Number. The Application Identification Number (Application ID) is allocated to the academic by the College Research Office and must be entered in the Application ID field on the application form. Please send requests for IDs to cos_ro@anu.edu.au.

Information required when requesting an Application ID:
  • Title
  • Surname
  • Given Name
  • Dept
  • College
  • Application Type
  • Project Title

SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS

Applications that involve a number of CIs across departments should submit their applications through the Office of the first named CI.

Draft Application Submission Process:
  • One (1) complete draft application submitted to CoSRO one additional week before the posted deadline.
  • Draft application returned to applicant advising recommendations.
  • Final Application returned to CoSRO per submission procedures below.
Final Application Submission Process:

A complete Final Application comprises the following:
  • One (1) original and one (1) copy of the application, marked as such.
  • The University form Authority to Apply for External Funding (RO-AP1), initialled by your local Finance Officer.
  • Signed NHMRC Certification Form.
  • Submitted to CoSRO in accordance with the schedule of due dates.

SOURCES OF ADVICE AND ASSISTANCE

Content:

It is expected that at least one academic colleague or mentor read your application prior to submission to CoSRO. Possible readers and sources of advice include senior colleagues, current and previous ARC grant holders, and/or Heads of Schools/Departments.

Finance:

Financial advice relative to your budget should be sought from your local finance officer. This includes advice on salary levels, on-costs, and standard purchasing and/or travel rates. Researchers must gain approval from their finance officer - including initialling of the Authority to Apply form prior to submitting their final application to CoSRO.

Grant Scheme:

Advice on grant schemes, University research policies, and procedures are available from your relevant Research Management Officer.

NHMRC will advertise the opening and closing dates for the following schemes on 29 February 2008:

International Schemes:

In addition to the above, NHMRC will continue to fund Australian participation through the following international schemes:
  • The European Union Seventh Research Framework Program
  • The Human Frontiers of Science Program
  • The European Molecular Biology Laboratory
Application dates for international schemes will be notified on the above organisations’ websites.

NHMRC will alert the Australian health and medical research community of the dates of these and all NHMRC schemes through NHMRC Tracker and NHMRC website (www.nhmrc.gov.au).
