Mel Bannister-Tyrrell

Degree: PhB Science (HONS)

Why did you choose to study at the ANU College of Science over any other institution?
ANU is the only university to offer the PhB program – I was attracted to the research opportunities, particularly the prospect of working with groups at the John Curtin School of Medical Research.

What is the ANU College of Science's best feature?
Class sizes are fairly small, particularly after 1st year. All of the lecturers I have encountered have been approachable, and there are good avenues for student feedback about courses, assessment etc.

What have you learned about yourself while studying at the ANU College of Science?
Probably lots of things, though it’s hard to pinpoint anything in particular. I like chemistry more than I expected, and still don’t like maths (despite studying it all through first year). I’ve certainly learned that I am a good crammer!

How do you feel the ANU College of Science is preparing you for your future?
Fantastic research opportunities through the PhB program – I am getting a good idea of where my interests are focused.

What is your favourite science class?
Biology – biochemistry, cell physiology and molecular genetics in particular.

What is your favourite elective class?
Haven’t taken one in a while, but I enjoyed a philosophy course I took last year.

Highlight ANU College of Science experience to date?
Going to Fremantle for work, as part of the National Science Week lecture series :)

What do you enjoy about living in Canberra?
The space! Canberra has some great walking/cycling tracks around the lake and throughout the city. It is convenient to live on campus at ANU because it is close to the shopping centre, restaurants, clubs, lake, Black Mountain... so basically I can walk or ride everywhere I need to go. Housing and eating out is also quite cheap compared to other cities in Australia.

Why did you choose to study a science degree?
I have a strong interest in biology. I also wanted a flexible science degree rather than a specialised degree so that I could study a few different things.

Career plans?
Medicine hopefully, and possibly a PhD after that... I would like to work in research hospitals practicing medicine and doing immunological research.

Ramana Kumar

Degree: Bachelor of Philosophy (Science)

Why did you choose to study at the ANU College of Science over any other institution?
Within Australia, I chose ANU CoS for the Bachelor of Philosophy program, which seemed both perfect for its broad scope and flexibility, and unique. Science, in a wide sense, has been my interest for many years. I looked overseas too, but decided that doing a first degree at home would make admission easier, and wouldn't preclude going overseas later.

What is the ANU College of Science's best feature?
In my experience of the college, which is far from thorough, I've found the biology and chemistry undergraduate programs to be very well structured, and therefore enjoyable and engaging.

What have you learned about yourself while studying at the ANU College of Science?
I've learned more about what fields I'm interested in, and what fields are out there. Actually, a lot of the learning has been done by observing what "scientific research" is both by participating in it (through advanced studies courses) and reading about it (through exposure to research papers in many courses). I've learnt about the global network of science: what scientists study, the rate of progress, the nature of the work, the people.

What is your favourite science class?
This semester? Algebra. I've been doing a mixture of classes. I especially liked other mathematics courses, and cell biology courses including genetics.

What is your favourite elective class?
I haven't really done electives, except computer science in first year. I could call the Biological Basis of Behaviour an elective, even though it's psychology, and it was one of my favourites.

Highlight ANU College of Science experience to date?
Maybe the summer school on animal navigation last year. I'm giving a talk at the school this year as part of an advanced studies course.

What do you enjoy about living in Canberra?
Clean air, differences between all the seasons, usually not too crowded, and I know where everything is.

Why did you choose to study a science degree?
I've been reading popular science books voraciously since around the start of high school. By the end I knew I wanted to be a part of science. In addition, it seems to me that scientists are special in that they do what they do primarily because they love it. I got a taste of this phenomenon at National Youth Science Forum during high school. It looked like a fine philosophy.

Career plans?
I'm happy to stay on the conveyor belt for a while: honours, PhD, post-doc. I've imagined working at a university (research, teaching, both, don't know what area of science yet), or starting a company (probably to make or provide some technology).

Hugh Parsonage

Degree: PhB (Science)

Why did you choose to study at the ANU College of Science over any other institution?
The offer of the PhB programme. The flexibility it offers and the additional advanced studies courses, where you get to work one-on-one with researchers, are unparalleled anywhere in Australia.

What is the ANU College of Science's best feature?
The proximity of students to high-class researchers.

What is your favourite science class?
I liked Algebra I. Whereas in high school algebra is the method of using letters to denote numbers, at university you learn that algebra is the study of deep mathematical structures – in particular, groups, rings, and fields – which are abstract ideas extended from the familiar whole numbers and real numbers.

Highlight ANU College of Science experience to date?
Being taken on a tour of the ANU's particle accelerator in my first year.

Joy Thompson

Degree: PhB (Science)

Why did you choose to study at the ANU College of Science over any other institution?
For the PhB (Science) degree. When I left high school it was practically the only degree of its kind and the chance to do real research as well as undergraduate courses was more tempting than a degree in medicine.
