| Vietnam Field School | Sep 24, 2008 |
 Every January for 3 weeks ANU offers the Vietnam Field School. The course immerses students in exploring environment and society issues in Vietnam. |
A key part of the course has been the active engagement of students from Da Nang university in the course. As well as hosting the Australian students in a home stay a number of these Vietnamese students have accompanied us into the field to work as translators for the Australian student research projects.

| New species of Pacific Iguana discovered | Sep 22, 2008 |
 In a new paper just published in the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society, Scott Keogh, Danielle Edwards and colleagues have described a newly discovered species of Fijian iguana, which they have named Brachylophus bulabula. |
They also have solved the riddle of how the ancestors of these iguanas got to the middle of the Pacific. All of their closest relatives are in the Americas and their ancestors rafted to Fiji up to 13 million years ago. It has made worldwide news. |

| ANU College of Science visits Cambodia for Teacher Training | Aug 16, 2008 |
 BaMBi's Sue Cossetto recently delivered a set of teaching workshops at the National Institute of Education in Phnom Penh. |
Secondary teachers from around Cambodia attended, gaining knowledge in teaching methods and current topics in biology.
Additionally, ANU College of Science donated prizes for the Teachers Science Fair where Sue was one of the evaluators. |

The Australian Federal Police, ANU and the Canberra Institute of Technology have compiled a national genetic database of cannabis samples, to help law enforcement agencies track down cannabis suppliers.
BoZo’s Dr Rod Peakall said establishing links between the plants was a complex process but said the cannabis program had been a test case for forensic botany. |

 The College visited Japan during June to showcase science with Austrade. |
As part of Study in Australia Week - JAPAN 2008 the College visited the Australian Embassy in Tokyo and four other major cities within Japan, from Fukuoka in the south, to Sapporo in the north. Meeting future postgraduate students and alumni of the college. As a result the ANU College of Science was invited to do an Industry presentation by the Embassy and plans to combine it with an Alumni social evening. |

This meeting, held every four years, is one of the major international meetings in the area of malaria parasite biology. |

 An international team including RSAA astronomer Professor Gary S. Da Costa has been studying the Antennae Galaxies and has produced a surprising result. New research on the Antennae Galaxies using the Advanced Camera for Surveys onboard the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope shows that this benchmark pair of interacting galaxies is in fact much closer than previously thought - 45 million light-years instead of 65 million light-years.

 Physicists in the US and at the ANU Centre for Gravitational Physics have used the quantum nature of light to make an important step towards improving the sensitivity of kilometre-sized interferometers used to search for gravitational waves. By using light in a "squeezed state" they achieved a 44% improvement in sensitivity of a prototype gravitational-wave detector. |

 ANU oceanographer Andrew Hogg has debunked one of the last arguments against global warming: that surges in CO2 levels have lagged behind warming at the end of ice ages, and thus the warming seen today cannot be blamed on the burning of fossil fuels. |
Andrew has shown "The end of the ice age was triggered by orbital variations which increased temperature, but carbon dioxide amplified the size of the temperature variation by a factor of ten." |

Sean Perera, a PhD candidate at the ANU College of Science, was awarded the "Edward Gray Memorial Prize 2007: Contribution to Australia Sri Lanka relations".
Sean was chosen based on his research at the Centre for the Public Awareness of Science, which investigates the effectiveness of communication models used in short-term professional development workshops for science teachers. He argues the potential for these workshops to empower teachers in Australia, Sri Lanka and Indonesia, from a science communication perspective. |

| ANU geologists confirm new Australian meteorite crater | Oct 25, 2007 |

In August Dr Andrew Glikson visited a 270m diameter crater in the Hamersley Ranges disovered last July by Dr Arthur Hickman of the Geological Survey of Western Australia.
Andrew collected samples to study at ANU to confirm the structure had the characteristics of a meteorite impact crater. |
