ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment and the ANU College of Physical Sciences

INTRODUCTION

The review of Biosciences at the ANU at the beginning of this year, and the many meetings associated with the response to this review, have provided a valuable opportunity to assess the future directions of research and education in this area. We have very much appreciated the large amount of input we have had from many staff across all levels. While much more work needs to be done, we believe that we have developed a model that will enhance the interactions across the campus and considerably strengthen all of science, medicine, health and the environment at the ANU. We hope that this strong, positive, engagement will continue and we look forward to working with you as this process develops.

RATIONALE FOR CHANGE

The University recognises the need to strengthen strategic planning, align administrative support with these plans and ensure consistency of policy and procedure. The proposals for change are aimed at supporting these goals.

Building on the changes made to date through the introduction of the ANU college structure, further changes are now considered necessary to strengthen strategic and operational planning, performance and consistency in administrative policies and procedures in the health, medical, biological and physical sciences.

NATURE OF THE PROPOSAL

It is proposed that two Colleges be formed to strengthen strategic planning in each area and constituent disciplines and alignment with University goals.

The implementation plan will include:

  • the creation of a new ANU College of Medicine, Biology and Environment comprising the John Curtin School of Medical Research, the School of Biology, the Fenner School of Environment and Society and the School of Health and Psychological Sciences
  • the creation of a new ANU College of Physical Sciences comprising the Schools of Astronomy and Astrophysics, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, Physical Sciences & Engineering and Mathematical Sciences
  • the merger of the School of Botany and Zoology, School of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Research School of Biological Sciences to form a new School of Biology
(This structure is outlined in Attachment 1: PROPOSED JOINT COLLEGES PLANNING)

A draft of the full proposal for the formation of the ANU Colleges of Science is available for discussion.
