Most diseases that present symptoms can only be properly understood by probing the underlying causes on the cellular and molecular scales. Over the last century, many branches of science have come together to give us the tools to observe and characterise cells and the biochemical processes inside them. This has revolutionised medicine and enabled us to effectively treat many diseases that were fatal only a few decades ago. Modern biochemists and medical researchers aim to advance our understanding of biochemistry and cellular function, where it goes wrong and how best to fix it. One area of biomedicine of particular interest to us is immunology; the mechanism by which the body defends itself from infection. We study the biochemistry of immune response and the genes that control the process in order to develop more effective treatments for a wide range of diseases from AIDS to cancer. We study the role of hormones within the body and their relation to medical problems such as high blood pressure. Another important area of our research is neuroscience - exploring the workings of the brain from functional anatomy on the large scale to the interactions of individual neurones. A first degree in biomedical science is excellent preparation for graduate entry medicine. ANU has a world class medical school that operates in collaboration with two major public hospitals in the region. The ANU Medical School employs problem based learning techniques to train future practitioners in a diverse range of clinical areas.
